Located in the heart of Vermilion Parish on the lush lowlands of Southwest Louisiana, the city and people of Kaplan Charaterize the best qualities of both a proud Acadian Heritage and a progressive-minded community of over 5,000 residents.

Before the year 1900, that section of Vermilion Parish of which Kaplan is now, was a swampy waste covered by tall yellow marsh grass. On the higher portions of the land were small farms, which the owners has obtained through the Homestead Act. The language spoken by the people was French, for most of them were the descendants of the Acadians.

The first settlers raised corn, cotton, sugar cane, cattle, peas, watermelon and providence rice. The rice was planted in low places and farmers depended on rain for irrigation. This rice was called providence because, if it rained, the farmers made a good crop whereas the reverse occurred if it didnot rain.

Kaplan was named for its founder, Mr. Abrom Kaplan. Incorporated just after the turn of the 19th century, October 1902, the wide variety of activity and attractions to be found in the area have made it one of South Louisiana's most unique cities.

Many features have combined to make Kaplan an economic recreational magnet, attracting industry, visitors and sportmen alike. One feature is the climate. Even in the deep winter months, hard freezes are rare. This means we can operate year round with minimum amoutn of down time due to weather.

The Univeristy of Louisiana at Lafayette, the second largest univeristy in the State, is a thirty minute drive. The City of Kaplan provides all the services needed for the safety and ell being of its residents with a well trained police force and fire department with the latest equipment and techinques.
